Every time I use Foundation, my favorite book (Foundation by Isaac Asimov) comes to mind.

Hari Seldon spent his life developing psychohistory, a form of mathematical sociology. Using statistical laws of mass action, he foresees the imminent fall of the Trantor Empire, which encompasses the entire Milky Way, and a dark age lasting 30,000 years before a second empire arises.
