At the heart of New Zealand’s central volcanic plateau sits the largest freshwater lake in Australasia, Lake Taupō.

The original Māori name was:
Taupō-nui-Tia derived from a volcanic cliff on the east coast of the lake. Tia was an Arawa chief.
