In October 2020 I sat at the place that is “my spot”, the one place that I just can't drive past. This place is my clarity. It speaks to me.
It is Injidup Bay, Western Australia.
That morning I decided to come back and shoot the Milky Way here, I wanted to truly capture the emotions & pull I feel when I’m here. I knew only an Astro shot could encapsulate this.
That night I returned but the weather rolled in and hid the stars.
However I did manage to capture a beautiful sunset here!
The original scene I had in mind had the “bottom” of the Milky Way rising up between two areas - I knew I wanted this scene.
I knew I only had my annual October holidays to complete this - it’s also when the Milky Way rests along the western horizon.
I went back a year later in 2021 to shoot again but the clouds took the stars away and the next year, 2022, a storm rolled in, again I was unable to capture it.
I was not giving up!
In 2023, just before a girls trip, I was staying near-by, I packed some dinner and headed to the spot to enjoy sunset and test the terrain to get my shot before the sunset.
THE SKY WAS CLEAR!!!
I won’t lie I sat there and cried as the sky darkened and the stars appeared, FOUR YEARS and I was finally getting my shot.
Just one small problem…
After 4 years I didn’t like the original composition any more!
I realised I needed to shoot from the spot where I sit each time I visit.
Overlooking the rock-face down to Inji’s stunning turquoise water… I realised this shot encapsulated EVERY single thing I love about this spot.
Following the shot I wondered around and shot a few other scenes.
Then I felt the usual “presence” I do when I’m here, this time it was extra strong. I knew I’d succeeded in my goal.
This is FourYears.
