'The background isn't limited to air, it picks up a splash of the skin tone from the shoulder and rises with it - the woman is literally giving warmth or heat to the space - the light edge of the neck practically disappears beside this, maybe the softest edge in the piece, pushing that round structure mist-fully back in space - the suprasternal notch (the V) is all the anatomy we get, below it the breast becomes an indistinct mass, with the exception of the shadow cast by the lace neckline leading us up again

in light the face is an immaculate pale rose, but in the shadow her lips are smeared across her cheek the innocence of the character is intact, even though there's a strong suggestion that she's just been passionately ruining her make up."
