The ten day drive north from Phoenix had left me bone-weary, and Rupert, my dog, patiently bored beside me. The final stretch to the ranch would be another hour or so at least on unsealed roads after turning off the highway.
Even though a big storm was on our heels, I pulled over to experience its magnificence and stretch my legs for a while. I needed to embrace this moment of transition, rather than push through the exhaustion.
As the storm grew nearer, the sky turned a deeper shade of gray, and the distant rumble of thunder grew louder, rolling across the landscape like a warning from my past life. It was a reminder of the beauty that can be found in moments of stillness or reflection.
I waited until I could feel the rain on my face, letting it wash away the desert dust and my fatigue.
