Tana Toraja, Indonesia, 2018. Mr. Kinda is posing with his wife Elisabeth during a Ma’nene ritual in the jungle of Tana Toraja. During the ritual, which is a manifestation of love for one’s ancestors, the bodies of the deceased are exhumed, cleaned, groomed and dressed in new clothes before they are dried in the sun. The ritual is usually practised once every second or third year in August after harvesting, and it is believed to bring luck and prosperity to the family.
Elisabeth died a year before this footage was filmed.
The sound on the video is from an elaborate funeral ritual (called a Rambu Solo) held in the same area.
This NFT is a part of the Dead and Alive Project about death rituals and how we relate to death around the world.
By purchasing this NFT, you will support the ongoing work on the project. 10% of sales will be given back to Kinda and his family, and 10% will be given back to my translator Yacob Kakke who made this part of the project possible.
