The rocky headland of Cape Agulhas is the place where two great oceans, the Indian and Atlantic, meet. It's also the official southernmost tip of Africa.
Its name “needles” in Portuguese is attributed to observations by early Portuguese navigators who noticed that the direction of magnetic north (and therefore the compass needle) coincided with true north.
Another explanation for “needles,” may refer to the jagged rocks and reefs of this beach that have wrecked many ships. Truth or legend, it was told this was the perfect refuge for mermaid to lure and sink boats.
When I first arrived to this unique place, I was amazed by the mist generated by the giant waves crashing on the reef. This mist, combined with the setting sun and colours I had never seen before, made me experience probably the best and most mystical sunset of my entire life.
I will never know if that young lady watching this fantastic spectacle of nature with me, was just a girl or a beautiful mermaid as the legends say.
