Driving north from Arizona to Montana, I’d been reading “Thunder in the mountains”, the saddening story of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce’s tribe’s flight through the Bitterroots from the US Army. I stopped by the trail to collect some water and ponder the heavy history for a while.
