"Binary Opposition" is an exploration of the nuanced interplay between opposing elements within the realm of monochrome photography, carefully curated by the visionary duo of Ponchang Kumven (The Countervail Gallery Co-Founder) and SierraRenee Nawabi Ayomikun Folashade (Itan World Founder)

This exhibition delves into the rich tapestry of shades, tones, and contrasts that exist within the spectrum of black and white imagery, transcending the simplicity of the binary. Each photograph is a testament to the inherent duality present in our world, inviting viewers to contemplate the harmony and tension between opposing forces.

Through the lenses of West African photographers, we witness a series of intimate moments and portraits. Each frame is a window into the lives of men and women intertwined with nature, each other, and their cultural heritage. These monochrome images strip away the distractions of color, allowing the raw beauty, intricate details, and profound emotions of the subjects to stand in stark, captivating relief.

A realm where colors fade, but stories and emotions shine with undimmed intensity. Thematic clusters highlight various binary oppositions - drawing inspiration from philosophy, nature, society, and the human experience.

"Itan" translates to "story" or "history" in Yoruba. Yoruba people are one of the largest and most culturally significant ethnic groups in West Africa. Yoruba culture is known for its vibrant and expressive arts, including sculpture, textiles, music, dance, and storytelling. Yoruba art has a strong emphasis on symbolism and spirituality and has influenced the broader African art world. Itan Foundation World isn’t just about displaying art, but also about telling the stories and histories of West African artists, their cultures and their creative journeys. Each artwork is selected for its ability to evoke a sense of storytelling and exploration.
