Duo Exhibition by BASQKEK and AZIZI AL MAJID

Welcome to an exploration of the absurd phenomena in our contemporary art world—where memes, low-resolution images, and the iconic Pepe the Frog (depicted by Basqkek) converge. This exhibition features two artists with one shared vision. Basqkek is prominent in NFT platforms, while Azizi Al Majid is a traditional artist who paints and draws. Here, they collide and intersect to let us see if there is any significance.

In this fast-paced information era, memes have become a universally recognized visual culture. More than just a cultural phenomenon, memes represent what Hito Steyerl calls the "poor image." These often blurry, compressed, and pixelated images are "image ghosts, previews, thumbnails, wandering ideas" widely spread on the internet and social media.

Azizi delves into how these low-resolution images, much like some of Basqkek's works, navigate this phenomenon. These images, sometimes intentionally or unintentionally poor in quality, spread rapidly, multiply, and often provoke. As Steyerl noted, these "poor images transform quality into accessibility, creating a cult-like following, turning film into clips, contemplation into distraction."

The other figure in the exhibition, Basqkek, is well-known on NFT platforms. He depicts the iconic Pepe the Frog, a comic character that has transformed into a global internet phenomenon. Pepe represents the fluidity of meaning in digital culture, showcasing how images can be downloaded, uploaded, and remixed globally.

This exhibition invites the audience to reconsider the phenomenon of images in the digital age. As memes and low-resolution images become popular mediums of expression today, how do they change our perception of images in the art field? Is there artistic value in the imperfections of these images?

THE MEMES

In the 1980s and 1990s, the concept of memetics began to attract attention outside academic circles. Researchers started exploring how memes spread, mutate, and influence social behavior. However, the major transformation in memetics occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the digital revolution.

With the advent of the internet, memes transcended their traditional cultural roots and entered the digital world. Early internet memes like "Dancing Baby" and "All Your Base Are Belong to Us" demonstrated how quickly memes could spread and adapt online. As platforms like 4chan and Reddit emerged, they became centers for meme creation and distribution, sparking a meme culture explosion.

The 2000s and 2010s became the golden age of memes, with social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok expanding their reach and influence. Memes evolved into powerful tools for discussion, satire, and social commentary, infiltrating various aspects of digital life and mainstream media. They reflect and shape public discourse, becoming a significant force in contemporary culture.

Today, memetics remains a dynamic field of study, examining the profound impact of memes on society. From influencing political movements to shaping online communities, memes remain a crucial part of our digital landscape. Through memetics, we gain insights into how ideas spread, evolve, and resonate in the ever-changing digital cultural world.

Memetica Incorporated

Memes continue to adapt and intersect with modern life. Memes have now become part of our daily lives, with their viral nature spreading quickly. In business, marketers cleverly use memetic strategies to design content that leverages current trends and truly resonates with audiences. They create campaigns that not only capture attention but also spark conversations and increase engagement.

In the world of art and culture, artists adopt memetic principles to produce relevant, contemporary works. Using memes and popular culture references, they create art that reflects the zeitgeist. Such works become mirrors of our digital era, depicting how we interact with and interpret the world around us.

Technology has also evolved by integrating memetic insights. Social media and recommendation systems are designed to understand how memes spread and develop. Algorithms are created to study user experiences, making content more engaging and relevant by following the natural flow of meme culture. This integration ensures that digital interactions are not only efficient but also in sync with the dynamic rhythm of online life.

In education and research, memetics offers innovative approaches to learning and analysis. Educators use memes to make complex concepts more accessible and engaging, bridging the gap between traditional education and digital culture. Researchers use meme dynamics to gain insights into information dissemination and cultural phenomena, providing a deeper understanding of digital behavior.

Simply put, Memetica Incorporated symbolizes how meme dynamics fuse with various aspects of life, reflecting the broad influence of digital culture. It shows how the power of memes can enrich communication, creativity, and understanding in a rapidly changing world. This fusion offers perspectives on how images are shaped and reshaped by the interconnected digital landscape.

Let’s explore this fascinating world—where humor, social critique, and creativity merge in unexpected image forms. This exhibition invites us to reconsider the value of images in the digital age, where the speed of circulation and intensity may be as important as resolution and exchange value.
