This collection began with a persistent thought that life is an accumulation of physical and mental scars in various states of healing. A series of recent life events led me down this path - the passing of my grandmother, a close friend who received a cancer diagnosis, and a family member I removed from my life for a private reason. All of the above led to the creation of a series of four pieces, that deal with scars, loss, death, disappearance, change, and a final piece that deals with hope, persistence, and new life. I lived in a dark, difficult headspace for around a month while creating the work for this collection. It was a challenge but a therapeutic and necessary exercise because I confronted recent scars and revisited some that will never heal. Then life changed in the blink of an eye. My wife told me she was pregnant, and something inside of me changed instantly. Instant happiness and tears of joy. The lingering effect has been profound- the darker themes that were occupying my thoughts have been washed away by a burst of colors. After receiving the pregnancy news, we traveled to New York for a week to visit friends, artists, and collectors. When I returned and tried to get back to work on the collection it was impossible. I tried to return to that previous mental state, but I wasn't able to access it. During hurricane season it's common for old trails to be washed away leading to the creation of new paths. Same goes for this collection. Same goes for life.
