AI Discoveries

Embark on a journey to "AI Discoveries," where the ancient craft and the cutting edge of algorithmic intelligence fuse into a spectacle of innovation and wonder. Artists embrace the unexpected by incorporating AI tools unveiling a tapestry of innovation. AI emerges not just as a tool but as a catalyst, sparking a dialogue between the creator and the unknown. The resulting artworks are not merely creations, but discoveries.

As artists infuse their vision with AI's unpredictable algorithms, unforeseen forms twist across the canvas. Colors shimmer with otherworldly vibrancy, and emotions well up from the depths of the digital realm. Artists collaborating with AI are defying preconceptions and revealing new aesthetic possibilities in a harmonious interplay. This is a celebration of the serendipity that arises when human creativity collides with the unexpected.

Art mirrors human emotions, experiences and our interpretations of the world. Driven by curiosity, artists leveraged new technologies since the dawn of humanity as a catalyst for expression. Museums are filled with artefacts that mark our collective progress. Skeptics argue that AI dehumanises art. But is this not just the next stage of this evolution, a collaborative canvas where the human-AI partnership strengthens creative expression?

Step into this story, witness the unfolding of art's next chapter, and be inspired by the limitless possibilities of this collaborative canvas.

“The computer actually humanises your production — not dehumanizes, but humanizes - Vera Molnar - Right Click Save interview August 16th 2022”

Jenni Pasanen

Jenni Pasanen is a digital artist from Finland. Art has been with her all her life exploring different techniques and materials. Her current approach of blending AI-generated images with digital painting creates a unique stylistic fusion.

In Jenni’s work dreamy forms take shape in a smoky haze, conjuring an imaginary world that feels both timeless and organic. Her aesthetics draw inspiration from nature's mysteries, mythological creatures swirling alongside classical aesthetics rendered with futuristic techniques. This results in soft, almost meditative artworks. Her work is a mesmerising balance between darkness and ethereal light.

“We humans are emotional animals, we limit our imagination to things we have experienced in our lives. By adding a machine that has no emotional limitations of its own, as a part of my work, I am able to create things I could have never been able to think on my own” - Visual Atelier 8 interview January ‘22.

Benjamin Bardou

Benjamin Bardou is a French visual artist and filmmaker pioneering the aesthetics of point clouds and volumetric video. Through his work, he invites viewers into a contemplative space where artificial memories, urban landscapes and classical artistry converse with modern technology, creating a narrative that is as visually captivating as it is intellectually stimulating.

Benjamin’s work creates a meditative space, inviting the mind to wander through dreamlike landscapes. Vivid colors dance across point cloud formations, which evolve and morph like blossoming flower petals. The result is a dreamscape, one that encourages the viewer to lose themselves in its tranquility.

"The latent space of artificial imagination is the space of all possible images. In it are contained all the past images produced by human history but also those to come. Through the medium of imagination, it is a question here of remembering entire sections of forgotten human history.

In the latent space, artificial memory and organic memory are not opposed but serve here to reveal dreamed or desired images. I travel through latent space as I would travel through a city: as a wanderer. Like a photographer with his camera, I wander around this place and let myself be surprised by the unexpected corners of our collective memory in order to update it in our present" - DM interview on X

“Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see" - Paul Klee”

Noortje Stortelder

Noortje Stortelder is a sculptor and digital artist from the Netherlands. Her work originates from recurring dreams. Her storytelling is focussed on “digital sculpture” working in a manner similar to traditional sculpture: layering, removing and adding elements. Rather than relying on style prompts Noortje prefers to articulate what she wants to visualize from her imagination.

The creation process starts with an actual physical sculptures, AI (DALL·E / Stable Diffusion) is used in the second phase before giving it final touches in PhotoShop. This unique blend of physical creations with AI creates artworks that transcend the physical limitations of traditional sculpture. Her pieces draw inspiration from the classical sculptures, with their surfaces reminiscent of molded clay and imbued with a texture as organic as nature itself. She imbues them with an expressive energy, weaving complex narratives where AI acts as a tool to push the boundaries of artistic exploration.

“My practice involves re-channeling and re-calibrating the meeting points and interfaces of bodies and technologies. I interweave ancient and new modes of expression to generate tensions and complications within the images of being human. I constantly transfer and translate between physical and digital phases until my expectations are subverted. I love the earthiness of clay and plaster and paper but I also enjoy the thrill of feeding these materials through a digital matrix or interface“ - DM interview on X

“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free - Michelangelo”

Chris Follows

Chris Follows is a British artist, ex chef and currently the Emerging Tech Lead at the University of Arts in London (UAL). Over the last few years, Chris has curated and spearheaded numerous creative tech events at the renowned Tate Modern. His “Artificial Mesh Painting” series was created using an AI training model based on all the Mesh Paintings Chris Follows created between 2022 and 2023. Chris’ Mesh Painting process reflects an evolving exploration of the interplay between the handmade and the machine.

Progressing from the process of assembling paper strips from billboard posters to employing traditional paint for a layered mesh pixelated effect, and finally embracing digital and AI technologies, Chris's artistic journey feels like a natural continuum.

The “Artificial Mesh Paintings” born from a bespoke data set, eloquently embody and celebrate the abstract, colorful and experimental nature of Chris’ digital mesh painting practice developed over the past two years. These artworks, fashioned through the unique lens of AI, serve as both a reflection and a celebration of the artist's evolving style. In this ongoing creative exploration, new abstract works emerge, delving into past colorful and graphical styles and themes through the transformative and experimental perspective afforded by AI.

“Purely prompt-driven AI outputs didn't align with my conceptual or aesthetic expectations, but integrating bespoke mesh painting datasets and text prompts enriched the overall connection to my art practice. I'm eager to further experiment with creating mesh paintings for image-to-image outputs, further maintaining my interest in the tensions between the handmade and the AI machine“ - DM interview on X

Francien Krieg

Francien Krieg is a Dutch oil painter and AI artist recognized for her unique celebration of the female form, particularly those of older women. Her work is breaking the stigma surrounding the fragility of aging and the female body with pride, compassion and dignity (although not all AI works focus on aging). There is a spiritual dimension transcending from the unfiltered rawness in each artwork, which dismantles the idealized aesthetics of youthful perfection.

Krieg's foray into AI art adds a new layer to her work. This convergence is leading to hybrid pieces that combine her own creative mastery with the unpredictable algorithms, further emphasizing the inner strength and resilience of each subject. Through her masterful blend of oil painting and AI, Krieg invites viewers to celebrate humanity, not just see it, but feel its undeniable beauty and profound wisdom.

“Since it is an artificial tool it is important that the output has some empathy and something human. It is what art should do” Francien Krieg, Exquisite workers interview, November 2022

“In art there are no mistakes, only opportunities for growth and exploration. - Mark Tobey”

Marco G. De Angelis

Marco is a multi-disciplinary artist, architect & 3D visualizer from Italy focussed on co-creating with AI. His work stands out by their softness, tenderness and sensuality, often featuring minimalistic portraits which provide a sense of serene tranquility. The gentle gradients and balanced composition embark the viewer on a timeless journey challenging the eye, stirring the soul, and igniting imagination.

Marco's experience with digital rendering is evident in his visual language that features a striking attention to detail. Despite being minimalist, there is a particular expression and individual resonance to everyone of Marco’s artworks characterized by harmony and delicatesse. Marco’s art glows with an ethereal luminescence, through a veil of translucent color layers.

His art engages with a number of references: classical art, street & fashion photography from the 20th century, and pop themes. They constitute the canvas upon which he expresses his personal meanings, consistent with the zeitgeist of our time. In his view, the photographic look is an accessible mean to communicate with the audience, and the binder for any visual or conceptual inspiration he draws in from the past.

“Artificial Intelligence is a new medium, in that it sparks and requires new techniques, which in turn become new meanings. Personally I use it on a number of levels, from the visualisation of an idea to the definition of hand-sketched details. Besides that, AI gives its best when used as a dialogic tool: a mirror, echo-chamber, or contributor who counters what you’re saying in that moment, back and forth, helping the creative process on an exponential scale“ - DM interview on X

AlonerOne

AlonerOne is a digital artist and creative director. AlonerOne's artistic vision thrives on juxtapositions. A dazzling vibrant gold palette sets the stage. The hardness of the metallic hues is softened by the meticulously detailed floral ornaments, resulting in complex pieces hinting at a quiet melancholy.

The subjects possess a paradoxical quality - both hard and soft at the same time. This tension creates a sense of balance within the expressive pieces. The creation process is as complex as the pieces themselves with hundreds of stages in Blender, photoshop and AI tools. This tweet provides more insights in the creation process and highlights the role of AI as an “assistant”

Considering art as a sequence of meticulous decisions made to convey an emotion between creator and viewer, I enjoy infusing the subject, composition, colors, and tonal values, while letting artificial intelligence act as an assistant, adding high-frequency details in defined places to excess. In doing so, I craft a baroque glitch style- DM interview on X

Lilyillo

Lilyillo is a multidisciplinary artist based in Canberra, Australia, working across traditional mediums of watercolor & drawing. Lilyillo collaborates with AI to explore personal histories, memories, and concepts of self.

One of the most striking aspects of Lilyillo's art is her use of color & patterns. She masterfully blends rich, saturated hues to create visually arresting compositions that draw the eye into every detail. Her palette often features wood, deep blues, and fiery oranges and warm yellows reminiscent of the natural world. Her artworks are filled with delicate patterns and ornamentation adding depth and texture to the scenes.

Lily works in various ways, sometimes using initial image prompting or drawing sketches and then using those as input across different AI models, jumping back and forth between AI, inpainting and out painting.

The interplay of various shapes contributes to the unique visual language that Lilyillo developed blending these inputs with AI. Her ability to seamlessly interweave organic, geometric, stylised, and abstract shapes allows her to create captivating illustrations.

“I was inspired by AI and that kind of freedom to explore without any kind of fear, backlash and making mistakes. These tools are so young. We are here in such an infant space and we all have to embrace them as a process of play. This is really liberating and quite scary.” Exquisite workers interview, November 2022

“We don't make art. We discover it. - Louise Nevelson”

Pale Kirill

Pale Kirill is a visual storyteller from Belarus whose work is a mix of religious and spiritual motifs combined with urban artifacts, portraying them using minimalistic and lucid symbols. Through a masterful interplay of colors and textures, Pale Kirill creates a dreamlike world that invites contemplation and reflection. His palette incorporates pops of pink. This use of pink acts as a counterpoint adding a layer of unexpected tenderness, subtle vulnerability and hint of playfulness to the pieces. Through the occasional use of color or softer elements, there is a subtle yet undeniable melancholic and nostalgic tenderness that permeates in Pale Kirill's work.

Some of Pale Kirill’s work is animated, adding to the storytelling. AI becomes a tool to revisit childhood memories through a very personal lens. The recurring presence of angels in Pale Kirill's work imbues their creations with a mystical dimension, blurring the line between the physical and the spiritual. These ethereal beings act as silent observers or subtle guides, adding a layer of intrigue and mystery to the already contemplative nature of the pieces. In Kirill's creations, there is a delicate balance between light and shadow, chaos and harmony. Each brushstroke seems to carry a story, each color a mood, inviting viewers on a journey of discovery and contemplation.

"Engaging with AI and the evolution of its processes deeply inspire me. Being immersed in UI design, collaborating with AI feels akin to conversing with humans, exchanging ideas through the medium of language. It is a vector to follow and evolve.

Furthermore, I view interacting with AI as a form of engaging with a collective consciousness, reminiscent of contemporary folklore or the narratives weaved by a shared mind. As you spend more time with it, you get better at understanding AI's logic and making your models better too. But every new result brings something unexpected. It seemed like you trained your model, and on the other hand, your model is training you too. That's what collaboration is." - DM interview on X

Sum

Sümeyra is a Turkish multidisciplinary artist who combines drawing, (digital) collage, painting and AI. Sum has a formal educational background in Fine Arts specialized in painting.

In her works, she questions life’s dynamic, presence and reality with a stable point of view, a reflection of her life. Her work includes both brighter and darker elements mirroring the nature of our minds. This acts as a reminder that beauty can reside in unexpected combinations, just as darkness and light dance together within us all. Even amidst the expressionism, surrealism and abstract elements that permeate Sum's work, a certain tenderness and softness and romanticism shine through.

Sümeyra's background in painting infuses her digital creations with a unique textural quality. Her works often exhibit a thoughtful use of form and brushstroke-like effects, even within the digital medium. This approach lends a sense of depth and richness to her art, blurring the lines between traditional and digital artistic expression. By feeding the AI her artistic DNA – her preferred themes, color palettes, and stylistic elements – she unlocks unexpected possibilities adding to the uniqueness of her work.

"One of my favorite aspects of art in the NFT space was its democratic nature for artists. But recently, a new dimension has been added to this. I believe that the development of next-generation art tools and the diversification of art through this technology have had a significant impact on creating such an environment. Naturally, this has influenced me as well.

Because artificial intelligence is a democratic tool with the most impressive technology. If I can access such a powerful tool, it would be a waste not to integrate it with my artistic foundation and use it" - DM interview on X

“Art is a journey of self-discovery. - Nam June Paik”
