Lorenzo di Piero de' Medici (12 September 1492 – 4 May 1519) – The Duke of Urbino
Lorenzo II grew up in the shadow of his grandfather Lorenzo the Magnificent, the original Lorenzo de’ Medici, who he’s sometimes confused for. He lived a short but eventful life of 26 years as he sought to distinguish himself, survived by daughter Catherine de' Medici & his illegitimate son, Alessandro de' Medici, who later became Florence's first hereditary monarch. Impatient by nature, he persuaded his uncle Giuliano to make him lord of Florence at 21 and 3 years later in 1516, convinced his uncle, Pope Leo X to make him Duke of Urbino. Thus beginning the protracted War of Urbino with the city’s current Duke & prompting Machiavelli’s tongue-in-cheek dedication of The Prince.
Lorenzo teaches us the lesson of patience and living one’s own life. If you’re an early NFT collector, you may also catch both Fake Rare references and hope it makes you smile, gn friends.
