Eros
Eros originally referred to the ancient Greek god of love or love itself, but Plato used the term to describe the spiritual desire to pursue the true reality, the Idea.
According to Plato, the human soul once saw the world of Ideas before it was born, but now it has forgotten it. The soul always has a longing for the world of ideas, and every time it sees a sensual object, it recalls the world of ideas and seeks the original idea of beauty. The desire of Eros for a beautiful body eventually leads to the desire for a beautiful soul, and ultimately to the desire for goodness and beauty itself. Eros, who yearns for the good and beautiful ideas, gives birth to philosophy (philosophia), which loves wisdom (sophia).
