Machines for Suffering I: flythrough v1 is an animated rendering of a 3D laser scan of a woman’s body. This data also exists as a life-sized, 3D printed sculpture. The series is the result of my ongoing investigation into hysteria, a once-prevalent but now discredited medical diagnosis that was applied largely to women.
The woman’s body is held up by an intricate network of tree-like supports, suggesting a monumental structure under construction (or perhaps demolition…) The video imagines a bug’s-eye view into, under and through the body, which is supported and also surrounded by a mechanical, wireframe forest.
Machines for Suffering I: flythrough v1 is on display at SPRING/BREAK Art Show in New York, from September 8th to September 13th, 2021. The work is presented in the exhibition CHAPEL, a hybrid digital/analogue installation curated by M. Charlene Stevens.
Collector receives a high resolution version of the video file (2160p, 298MB).
