The anonymous, England-based, graffiti artist, Banksy, debuted his first film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Even though billed as "The world's first street art disaster movie," the film was nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Documentary Feature.
The day after the Oscars, my daughter, Leslye, was miserable that Exit Through the Gift Shop had not won the coveted award. But a friend consoled her with the words, “Don’t worry Leslye; Banksy always wins.” When the conversation was relayed to me, the image of my daughter, Leslye, at age 2, holding an Oscar, leapt into my mind. And within a week, this piece was finished.
Soon after my piece was released, Banksy responded to the Oscars with street art of a little girl holding an Oscar and pouting. Banksy’s piece is VERY similar in spirit to this one, but there is no way Banksy saw mine. Thus proving, one way or the other, the Zeitgeist of our time will be spoken!
