Description

A vanished signboard store. A fading art form. And over 30 years of perseverance and dedication to one’s art. This photo is a piece of Hong Kong history about one of the last hand-made signboard calligraphers in the city – Master Au Yeung Cheong. His unique calligraphy style, also known as the “Zen Script” and can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty of China, is characterised by its strong and proportionate strokes. While the era of hand-written calligraphy signboards is fast fading in favor of cheaper LED alternatives, Master Au Yeung remains in the same shophouse, continuing to perfect his art and determined to pass down his legacy. Sadly, the store in the photo has been demolished due to redevelopment plans. Master Au Yeung had no choice but to cramp his lifetime work in a distant location away from the crowds, since he could not afford the expensive rent in the city. I bring to the metaverse his story, hoping to pass down the cultural heritage of my home- HK.
