Eden was a paradise only for those who obeyed its laws.
Dissent, willfulness, and a desire to learn about the outside world were punished by banishment, isolation, or "re-education".
Faith was paramount. The slightest doubt was illegal. The laws said that beyond the borders of Eden lurked enemies whose minds were driven by Satan. An enemy no one had ever seen, but whose existence everyone was forced to believe.
But not everyone believed.
