I've always loved rendering caves. Over the years I've used all sorts of different tools to fashion the intricate rock formations they require and for this project I tried something completely new.
I used Houdini and a similar technique that I employed with "Threshold" to create some interesting "rock" geometry. I then imported that geometry into my landscape design program, VUE, and used procedural textures to simulate a sandstone cave which you can see in the companion render to this: "Subterrane (2022)".
When I first created the geometry I had to make a decide if I wanted my cave to be stone or ice. I chose stone for the first version, but decided to do a version with ice as well. That's the power of 3D Art :-)
As with most of my renders, I tried very hard to make this look like a photograph but it is very much an imaginary place that I half-created, half-discovered in my computer.
