On 16 September 2022, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini also known as Zhina Amini was killed in Tehran by the morality police of the Islamic government of Iran for not wearing the hijab by Islamic standards.
Witnesses said she was severely beaten, which in addition to her leaked medical scans, led to a skull fracture and stroke, but the Police denied to accept it.
Mahsa's death resulted in a series of large-scale protests across the country which garnered international attention putting a focus on violence against women in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The government of Iran attempted to suppress the protests, shooting protesters, blocking access to social media, and limiting internet accessibility to reduce protesters' ability to organize.
All Meta apps, Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp restricted Iranian content while it Trends on a scale of more than 100M hashtags on Twitter.
