Actaeon was a hunter in ancient Greece who, whilst out hunting with his hounds, stumbled upon the chaste Goddess Artemis bathing in a grove with her nymphs. As punishment for this unfortunate transgression he was transformed into a stag and then hunted and killed by his own dogs.
