Zachary was a thief - young, cheerful, daring, a kind of modern Robin Hood, taking from the rich and helping the poor. As a child, he miraculously survived, having been ill with cholera, and therefore believed that he needed to live brightly, because his life was literally borrowed from death. He was handsome, amorous, loved risk and was never afraid of anything. Once he robbed the house of the richest merchant in the city - no one ever caught him - but as he ran, he scratched himself on an old rusty hinge on the door. A tiny, almost invisible scratch and tetanus did what the almighty cholera could not do - killed Zachary. Already a ghost, Zachary liked to say that his life was a gift, because for him everything could have ended in 4 years, but he got the opportunity to live another 20.
