Ouroboros

Yomu Yakadashi

Description

For Hyperborean Gnosticism, "the serpents, represented in Mercury's caduceus (intertwined in a staff) and in Ouroboros (devouring its own tail), symbolize the elevated soul, ecstatic in nirvana, luminously.

The serpent breaks a linear evolution, by biting its tail, marking a change, as a result of which it seems to emerge at another level of existence, symbolized by the circle. For some authors, the image of the serpent biting its tail, closing in on its own cycle, evokes the wheel of existence.

The wheel of existence is a solar symbol in most traditions. Unlike the circle, the wheel has a certain valence of imperfection, referring to the world of the future, of continuous creation, of contingency, of the perishable.
