Join me in beholding the Cocoon Nebula, a swirling cloud of gas and dust that seems almost to fall through space like a meteor, trailing darkness instead of flame.
It is a place of transformation, where new spherical thermonuclear reactors are brought into being.
At the heart of the nebula lies a young star, its UV rays driving the birth and evolution of the surrounding gas and dust. From this cosmic crucible, new stars will emerge, repeating the cycle.
This image was captured using my Skywatcher Esprit 120 apochromatic telescope.
You will also notice a blue glow, which is caused by starlight reflecting off the surrounding clouds of dust. A cool, natural contrast, and quite convenient for a space-nerd like me who seeks to make art out of devastating cosmic events.
