Description

The First Storey Building in Nigeria was built by Reverend Henry Townsend a missionary of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in 1845.

The building served as the official residence of St Anglican Church. The foundation was laid in 1842 and it was completed in 1845. It is located in the coastal town of Badagry.

The structure was said to be occupied by Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first African C.M.S Bishop when he undertook the translation of the Holy Bible from English to Yoruba. It was also used as Vicarage for Saint Thomas Anglican church.

The white one-storey building has four stores, six rooms, two sitting rooms, a safe and it overlooks the marina waterfront.

In the upper floor of the building, there is a glass containing the English and Yoruba versions of the Bible that was translated by Bishop Ajayi Crowther.
