I headlined at The Meadows in Brooklyn for the first time last week in front of a 150+ people. Every show is getting bigger than the next. But this time I decided to run my set a bit differently than usual.
How do you separate yourself from others as a performing artist? Everyone can rap well and sing well. But my favorite concerts have always been ones where I feel emotionally invested. My first concert ever was J. Cole's 2014 Forest Hills Drive tour. It was a life-changing experience because he sat down in between songs to tell you real stories about his life that lead him to this moment. He made you dance and cry in the same concert. THAT is what I wanted to do with my show. I wanted to bring you into my world.
So I decided to treat my setlist like an album and string a narrative through all the songs that tie it together - a story of growth and self acceptance, a journey of audio journals.
The power of storytelling was alive and well that night.
