📍Hoi An, Vietnam
During the colonization of Vietnam the French levied taxes on boats. So when Vietnamese fisherman could not afford to pay them, they created an ingenius loophole; the Thung Chai. These giant woven circular baskets were not techincally boats, but the Vietnamese were able to use them as one so they could continue to fish without paying the boat tax. Today, these basket boats are a popular tourist attraction in cities like Hoi An.
