Red sprites are a massive, milliseconds long flash of light caused by break downs in the upper atmosphere above strong lightning. They are very tricky to document. But here in Oklahoma, we have some of the most extreme weather on the planet and therefore sprites can be seen on particularly electric evenings.
This is one of the most amazing red sprite captures in this area, with a large , bright complex bursting in the distance above a nearby butte. It almost looked like a volcano erupting for a second. To think of the power involved in the lightning that caused this is just awe inspiring.
