Damayanti is a character in a love story found in the Vana Parva book of the Mahabharata.

The story goes like this, one day, a beautiful swan came to Damayanti, the princess of Vidharba Kingdom, and told her about Nala, king of Nishada. The swan was sent by Nala after hearing about her from it. After hearing the praises of Nala, she was impressed with him and wanted to marry him. A 'swayamvara' was organized by Damayanti's father and she chose Nala out of the kings and princes to marry. They stayed together through many hardships and together till the end.

Raja Ravi Varma immortalized the moment when Damayanti meets the swan in his painting 'Hamsa Damayanti Samvad' translated to the 'Meeting of the Damayanti and the Swan' in oil.
