Out of Context

Chris Hytha

Description

Urban poles are objects of pure utility. They direct traffic (both automotive and pedestrian), visually identify street names, and provide light. What happens when this object is stripped of the context that it serves?

My visual investigation of urban poles is intended to present a banal object in a new light. Devoid of context, the utility of the poles is stripped, leaving disconnected references to a world unseen. In its new context, the pole is experienced as sculptural rather than utilitarian, changing our perspective of this everyday object.

This artwork is a composite of four photographs in Adobe Photoshop.
