Young King Baldwin IV was diagnosed with leprosy soon after his father's death, but he did not let the disease prevent him from leading his men into battle.
The painting depicts Baldwin IV being carried into battle against Saladin. Nearby is the bishop holding the relic case containing what was believed to be a piece of wood from the cross of Jesus Christ. The relic was the most potent icon of the Crusaders. Baldwin prayed to the relic before the battle in front of his men, inspiring them to victory.
Baldwin and Saladin clashed several times, each leader winning the respect of the other. Hearing the young King was unhorsed in one battle, Saladin sent him a magnificent Arabian stallion. He also sent doctors to help treat Baldwin. Baldwin continued to go into battle with his men, even when he was completely blind and had lost the use of his hands and feet by 1183.
