The three monkeys have their origin in the writings of Confucius, Taoism, & Japanese Shintoism. In Buddhist tradition, the tenets of the proverb are about not dwelling on evil thoughts. It may also signify a code of silence in gangs, or organized crime & also used to refer to a lack of moral responsibility on the part of people who refuse to acknowledge impropriety. It is said that, statue of the Three Wise Monkeys is one of Mahatma Gandhi's very few possessions.
