“Stories from the Threshold”

‘Stories From The Threshold’ is a themed collection of four 1/1 by Luke Gr1ndhouse, addressing the topic of liminality, existence and identity. The collection is a journey deep in a timeless, unfathomable dimension of the self: a voice from our subconscious, the elusive yet familiar toll of a distant bell, unexpected encounters on a black hole’s event horizon.

In anthropology, liminality (from Latin līmen 'a threshold') is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of a rite of passage, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the rite is complete. Ambiguity, disorientation, but, also, a dimension of the self dense of possibility, where everything has not yet happened but can happen in any moment. The calm before the storm of our potential being. Transposed into Luke Gr1ndhouse’s art, the theme finds an existential dimension in the battle between two tensions of our soul: the urge to explore our most remote self, seeking for our identity and, on the other hand, the indulgence coming from a state of awareness as a spectator.

This is not just a journey within ourselves. This is about our daily struggles, the impulses of our soul and the effort to follow our dreams, despite the past and the worries that try to hold us back. Technically, these high-res pieces enclose in a portrait format the usage of more media: AI softwares/steps/layers are accompanied by Photoshop, and Lightroom.

Ultimately, it’s the feeling that permeates all the four pieces what prevails over everything. With the artist’s words: ‘this collection is me and it is us, there on the threshold, fighting every day. With our emotions, contradictions, ready to take flight.’
