Japanese digital artist guruguruhyena guides us through portals of emotion rendered in overwhelming color, glitchy layering, and avatar-like femininity.
“What flickers through them is the prosperity of my and your hearts, like a mirror,” guru explains. These are emotional entities: symbolic avatars of joy, chaos, desire, anxiety, and transformation.
Stickers, sparkles, pixels, ribbons, and digital noise create a dense, delicious visual feast. “I think about using colors that look delicious,” says guru. “Color is the first thing that enters the brain, so by making it look delicious, I appeal to your brain.”
The girls flicker between softness and intensity—sometimes cute, other times obscured by masks, melting textures, or glitches. It’s a deliberate tension. “By blending opposites, I’m exploring a third, new path,” guru says. “It’s a process of weaving together the illusions in my mind and materializing the unconscious.”

Created with tools like bucketbender, journypaint, and custom AI-powered image processors, guru embraces the unique quirks and limitations of these systems. The result is a new aesthetic language—part pop idol, part corrupted file, part spiritual mirror.

“The girls are not fantasy for fantasy’s sake. They are emotional interfaces—portals that carry memory, melancholy, innocence, and psychic unrest. When our avatars begin to feel more real than our flesh, where do our dreams go? What happens when you melt reality, pixel by pixel?”
