In Tibetan Buddhism, Shambhala is a mythical kingdom or hidden place somewhere beyond the snow peaks of the Himalayas. The kingdom is mentioned in various ancient texts, including the Kalachakra Tantra.
The concept of Shambhala plays an important role in Tibetan religious teachings, and has particular relevance in Tibetan mythology about the future. The Kalachakra Tantra states that a great army will arise out of the Shambhala kingdom to restore the earth at a future time. This militant vision has been interpreted both metaphorically and literally. For the literalists, Shambhala is a real place and various ideas about its location have been propounded: it is often placed in central Asia, north or west of Tibet. Ancient Zhang Zhung culture, which pre-dates Tibetan Buddhism in western Tibet, identifies Shambhala with the Sutlej Valley in Himachal Pradesh. Mongolians identify Shambala with certain valleys of southern Siberia.
In Theosophy, Shambhala is a legendary place situated in central Asia. According to Theosophical teachings, great spiritual adepts are said to reside in Shambhala.
Helena P. Blavatsky, a co-founder of the Theosophical Society, described Shambhala as once being a fair island in the inland Sea of the Tibetan plateau. Now, it exists as an oasis surrounded by barren deserts and salt lakes. Theosophical literature places Shamballa in the Gobi Desert. It is believed to be the abode of a great hierarchy of adepts. Every seventh year, these teachers are said to assemble in Shambhala, the “happy land” located in the North-West of Tibet or other regions.
In the PURUŚAS, Shambhala is considered the place from which the next KALKI-AVATĀR (a future divine incarnation) will emerge.
The legend of Shambhala gained credibility when Nicholas Roerich undertook an expedition in Central Asia from 1923 to 1926. Roerich’s accounts and observations suggested the real existence of Shambhala, adding to its mystique.
In summary, Shambhala remains a captivating concept — a hidden kingdom where spiritual wisdom and enlightenment are said to flourish. Whether it exists in physical reality or as a metaphorical realm, its allure continues to inspire seekers and mystics alike.
The Path to Shambhala collection is a tribute, by the author, to the voyage that Nicholas Roerich and Helena Roerich undertook in the Altai Mountains and the Himalayas to find the entries of Shambhala at the beginning of the 20th century. But it is also a metaphor for the inner path we all must undertake to reach the realms of our Soul, the only one that will bring us true freedom and redemption.
