Growing up in the Blue Ridge mountains, I was no stranger to the 4.5 mile hike straight up a mountain to reach McAfee’s knob, perhaps the most famous mountain peak in our region. I especially remember one trip where we started the hike in pure darkness at about 3AM. Just after reaching the iconic peak with it’s rock formation jutting out over-top the surrounding scenery, the sun began to peak the horizon.
