The begena is a stringed instrument from Ethiopia, traditionally associated with the spiritual music of the Amhara people. It is said to have originated from the kinnor, an instrument from Ancient Israel. However, its true origins are uncertain, with some evidence pointing to the 15th century AD. It is the only instrument used exclusively for playing zema, the spiritual part of Amhara music.
