This illustration is the main visual for a solo exhibition I held when the Heisei era ended and the Reiwa era began.

It depicts many things that boomed in Japan during the Heisei era.

You may need to explain that Gengo is used only in Japan.

We have two calendar systems, the western calendar and the one based on Gengo.
Gengo is the name of the Japanese era attached to a specific period of years.
Gengo is used on documents, calendars, coins and so on.

The current era is the 平成(Heisei), which began with the accession of a new emperor to the throne on January 8, 1989, and will last until April 30, 2019.
平成(Heisei) means ”achieving peace”.
