Nono, or “grandfather”, is the shorthand mythological reference to the crocodile (Buwaya). Nono was highly devoted to Philippine mythology. Out of both fear and reverence, the Buwaya is a symbol of power and strength. They offered prayers and gifts to coexist with the beast and pass along peacefully in their boats. The iconography of the Buwaya is reflected in pre-colonial script (baybayin) and tattoo motifs. Today, the symbol has fallen towards a more negative connotation, tainted by politics and Western ideas; however, recognition of its pre-colonial significance is becoming more apparent with cultural rebirth.
In an effort to challenge the existing body of AI prompt art, the DiwatAI Project explores pre-colonial Philippine mythology. All pieces were created using Midjourney and Dalle2. For a deeper dive into these stories, I encourage everyone to check out The Aswang Project.
