Karakattam (கரகாட்டம்), a cornerstone of ancient Tamil folk arts, is an extravagant tribute to rain goddess Mariamman. An ultimate show of dexterity and skill, Indian men take immense pride in showcasing this beautiful folk dance to the rest of the world, in unison with their female counterparts. As if dancing while balancing a fragile waterpot on their head wasn't impressive enough, these performers take it a step further by dancing on rolling blocks of wood or steel mugs and even play with fire!

Unfortunately, this traditional artform is slowly fading away with artists and the artform being neglected. Let's do what we can to keep the Karakattam tradition alive!
