Irezumi (inserting ink) is the Japanese term for tattoo, and is used in English to refer to a distinctive style of Japanese tattooing. All forms of irezumi are applied by hand, using wooden handles and metal needles attached via silk thread.

Irezumi Symbology

Geisha tattoos symbolize beauty and mystery. A reminder of transience, cherry blossom tattoos are a wonderful floral symbol that imbues love, beauty and the passing of time, while lotus flower is believed to represent the awakening of life. Chrysanthemum blossom or solar flower on the other hand is often portrayed as a symbol of perfection.
