Description

My first computer was a 486/66 that my Mom gave me as a graduation present in 1995. It wasn't very powerful compared even to today's cell phones, but at the time I thought it was a powerhouse.

It was certainly powerful enough to create scenes using Bryce3D, which was my main tool at the time. Bryce was designed for landscapes. It had some crude privatives (cubes, spheres, etc) that could be used to assemble objects but you had to use your imagination for more detailed scenes.

I wanted to create a city scape but didn't have a way to model buildings. I discovered that I could use Bryce's heightfield modeler (used for mountains) with an image map of shaded squares to create a blocky landscape that suggested skyscrapers if I textured it properly. The fog completed the illusion.

Early CG (for me) was all about creating the effects I needed using the tools I had available. I have revisited Gotham often as my tools and capabilities improved but I'm proud of this starting point.
