On July 27th 1995, Johnny Cash recorded "Time Of The Preacher' at Bad Animals studio in Seattle for the "Twisted Willie" album of Nelson cover songs. The song was recorded with Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, Krist Novoselic of Nirvana, Sean Kinney of Alice In Chains, and his son John Carter. As Cash said about this song: "Now that I've listened to it, I'm very proud of it. It's not everybody's cup of tea, but I like it"
When I entered the studio, I introduced myself to Cash, a little shaky in my voice and hand, sweat pouring from my brow. "Hi, I'm Johnny," he replied in that deep baritone voice while shaking my hand. I nearly died.
What an incredible honor it was to spend an evening with this soft spoken, charming, but deeply intense man. He was by no means mad or upset about anything in this photograph - that's just the way he was.
This and other prints from the session were gifted to the Johnny Cash Museum archives in 2020.
