Description

I didn’t discover this image on the proof sheet until seven years after it was taken. I guess it just didn’t make much sense to use at the time. Sadly, years later, it allegorically made too much.

Rarely do stage images take on this sort of import, and in this case it's almost purely through the composition and use of negative space to evoke scale and emotion. Negative space for a negative creep, as Kurt would most likely say while chuckling softly.

I don't recall the camera details on this, but the image is full frame, and taken with a 24 or 28mm wide angle lens, using a flash on Tri-X film. I always found it nerve wracking shooting from behind the performer, but it also allows the viewer to get a small glimpse into their stage experience.

Despite seeing Kurt only from behind, he is instantly recognizable and has been used around the world for books, magazines, television and film. It is considered one of my best photographs of Kurt, and is certainly a moving favorite of mine.
