Description

In this work flashing lines as if of lightning in a machine interpretation of air space are forming a mysterious image of Archimedes’ ghost.
This work is dedicated to computer AN/FSQ-7 which was a part of the SAGE system. The SAGE was the Cold War era US air defend system with its radars and computers monitoring and analyzing airspace for possible air attacks from 1958 to the 1980s. Its computer AN/FSQ-7 was the second real-time computer with an electronic graphical display in history. It could show an air picture, used a light gun as an input device and allowed to draw vector-based lines on the display. This made AN/FSQ-7 one of the ancestors of graphical user interfaces.
Moreover, it is famous for having the first documented image of a human being rendered on a computer screen, when one of the workers drew an image of a glowing lady on a situation display on top of an air picture.
Here I try to highlight the art value this device as a piece of abstract figurative minimalism.
