Demolition of the Glass Bank Building

Rob Stephenson

Description

Built in Cocoa Beach in 1962, an architectural testament to the Space Age, the Glass Bank housed Ramon's Rainbow Room, a cocktail bar frequented by astronauts and celebrities, where guests could watch space launches from nearby Cape Canaveral.

As NASA’s budget was reduced, the Space Coast’s fortunes began to decline and Ramon’s closed in 1970. The building remained largely vacant until local attorney Frank Wolfe purchased the rights to the penthouse and added a two story concrete addition. The new penthouse had an artificial stream, a faux-stone mountain, a foot bridge, and numerous jacuzzis, but no windows. After Hurricane Frances in 2004 the building began to fall into disrepair. Eventually the city of Cocoa Beach foreclosed on the property and shut off utilities in preparation for demolition. On February 5th, 2014, Frank Wolfe took his life with a self inflicted gunshot wound outside the building.
