The butterfly itself cannot see its own wings and in a way cursed to never recognize or appreciate its very own beauty very much like our inability as people to appreciate our own gifts.
The giant owl butterflies are species of the genus Caligo (meaning darkness) and are known for their huge eyespots, which resemble the eyes of an owl. This pattern on its wings serves as a deterrent from predators as the eye is a large warning sign to approach.
They are found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Mexico, Central and South America.
Butterflies are not only beautiful, but also have mystery, symbolism and meaning and are a metaphor representing spiritual rebirth, transformation, change, hope and life. The magnificent, yet short life of the butterfly closely mirrors the process of spiritual transformation and serves to remind us that life is short.
