Kenshin Himura is an expert swordsman. At one point in his past he put his skill at the service of the Ishin Shishi as a hitokiri. During this time he received the name Hitokiri Battōsai and was the most famous and feared assassin of these times. After the fighting ended, he decided to become anonymous and from then on became a wanderer who travels the country helping people as a way of making amends for all the lives he took. He carries with him a sakabatō, katana where the blade and the diamond side are reversed and allows him to use his style of kenjutsu, the Hiten Mitsurugi-Ryū, without the risk of it being deadly. The story begins in the year 11 of the Meiji Era, ten years after the end of the Bakumatsu and with it, the Tokugawa Era; upon Kenshin's arrival in Tokyo, he meets Kaoru Kamiya, a 17-year-old teenager who is an orphan of both parents, to later end up together.
