Minotaur (2021) is a masterwork that truly shows the growth of Burrows’ RAKTISM method into its full form. This work reframes the Greek myth of the Minotaur through the lens of the Jamaican Rolling-Calf myth.
The story is that if you have an unpaid debt to the butcher when he dies, you will unleash a Rolling-Calf, a terrifying flaming spirit with the head of a bull and the body of a man. Segmented into moments in time, the viewer’s eye is initially drawn to the tranquil expression on the Minotaur’s face, showing the human within the animal.
The past and the present, the living and the dead are shown in the various segments of the painting: a horn dripping red in the upper right, the Minotaur holding his own heart in the lower center.
