Zal or Dastan is one of the Iranian mythological heroes whose name is mentioned in the Shahnameh. Zal means white hair in Persian. He is the son of Sam and the father of Rostam. Sam was unhappy that his son was born with white hair (albinism) and in the form of a fairy or a demon. Therefore, he left him at the foot of Alborz mountain where Simorgh had nested. Simorgh found the baby and took it to its nest and raised it. From now on, Simorgh is the helper of Zal and his son Rostam until the end of his life.
